Ephat Mujuru was born in Zimbabwe and since his childhood this master Shona musician has been a natural percussionist, playing drums, rock gongs, marimba, dimbwa (bow), and chipendani (mouthbow), in addition to his principle instrument, the mbira. Ephat absorbed a great deal of traditional Shona music from his elders. When Ephat was seven years old, his grandfather, Muchatera Mujuru, began to teach him the family repertoire of traditional pieces for mbira. By the age of fourteen Ephat was performing throughout Zimbabwe, and at nineteen he was the leader of his own mbira ensemble.
Today Ephat Mujuru is based at the Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare and performs solo, as well as with his group The Spirit of the People.
